New thread for just my Z! Thought this would be a good way to kick it off.... Be jealous Z31 guys..... I once more have a functional stock radio! Got an untouched wiring harness that was pretty similar. It didn't have 1 connection that came off the radio. Comparing it to my old chopped up wiring all the others were still there. The only functionality I lost (which I can add later if desired) is the switch for full or half staff operation of the antennae but since the mast on that is broken anyway... I don't care. I also had to change a connector for the clock. Different connectors same wires. It doesn't get great reception and I have yet to try a cassette but it fast forwards and rewinds, so I am very optimistic!

Im going to have to mess with the Tape deck.... the play button is stuck and it wont slide down when a cassette goes in. Still happy it powers up and works though!

Welp, on the way to work I couldn't shift into third and had no reverse...
So depending on the budget/availability of parts. I'm thinking of a rebuild on the transmission, finding a used one and slapping it in, or hunting for a good parts car for a manual swap. Right now the first two seem most viable. There is a used one with more miles at a JY in cedar rapids... but the money going to get it ect. would probably be better spent on a rebuild.
All in all it seems to shift a little smoother with the few gears I have left. And I did manage to get it into 4th I think... on the way home.
First off I will drop the pan and look at the filter and then change the filter and fluid to see if that helps at all. I do know the fluid that is in there is pretty nasty.

Now I'm getting excited to tear into this. Rebuild kits are pretty darn cheap off of rockauto. And it would be a good excuse to replace the valve cover gaskets and whatever else that leaks like a mofo on the engine. Have some downtime to do the brakes as well. Through some new suspension parts under there.
If it is going to be garage bound for a while I might as well make the most of it! haha

Ben,
Sorry to hear your Z is having issues. This is just a bad time to have car problems with the cold weather, unless you have a heated garage. With the time and money you'll spend, it will probably be better to get the transmission rebuilt and you won't have to worry about for a long time! Let us know how it works out!

No heat! I think I will attempt the rebuild myself... and lean on more experienced people for advice as needed. I think it will be pretty straight forward once I get it off the car. Removal and installation will probably be the most difficult for me with the garage I have available. It will take a lot of cleaning and organizing before and during the whole process.
And if all goes well I should be on the road again when the weather is a little warmer!

Sorry to hear about the trouble Ben. At first I was hoping for a manual swap but I understand the financial constraints. Most important is to get it back on the road.

I'm not going to rule it out but the rebuild would be cheapest. I do have a line on a vq35 + a 6 speed from a 350z if I want a long term project. It would be AWESOME but i don't know if I'm ready for that level of involved! haha

Why not go all the way and drop in the 350's twin turbo engine.

Alright I'm finally getting moving in the right direction! Came home this weekend to clean the garage so I have room to move! (and see my mom for mother's day) The garage space I have is pretty packed we have a ton of stuff crammed into the space. That's an older picture but it shows what I have been working with in terms of space. Plus the second stall in that garage is packed too. I spent all day on Saturday rearranging, moving, and throwing stuff away! Here's what I've got now! I have moved plastic tubs around and moved the pallets that used to be in the middle to the left wall. The mower, kayak, and canoe can all be drug outside for more space. And best of all I can get to the work bench without climbing over a lot of junk! Next step is to get it in the air, drain the trans fluid and start to get it the hell out! Probably not going to do that all in one day as I'm sure I will need to buy more tools and I want to rig up a wooden rack to the trans so I can slowly lower it to the ground without bench pressing it or having to use a jack and balancing it. After I get the transmission fixed; plans are for a new left rear caliper, front rotors and pads, valve cover gaskets... and a few other things.

True Robert!
My brother and a couple of friends from the Z31P forum have been talking... and apparently I'm going to BZF 2015. So now I'm pushing to get a lot done on it before then!

Ben, It really helps to have a goal to motivate you and you'll love Branson! Maybe I should have a goal to get my car done, like BZF 2024! Robert S.
